Biography

Even as a child, Reb Dovidle was passionate about music. His love of melodies began with him plucking out the notes of Hatikvah on a synagogue piano aided by a kindly elderly gentleman. By 8, he knew that he wanted to learn more and pleaded with his parents for piano lessons. Alas, at that time, such a luxury was beyond the family’s reach. Undeterred, Reb Dovidle joined the school and synagogue choir, and played bongos for the then unknown Jewish folk music performer, Reb Shlomo Carlebach. With his bar mitzvah money, he purchased a $18 steel stringed guitar which shredded his fingertips yet did not dissuade him from teaching himself guitar, piano and music theory.

Debuting in New York City in the “New Moods” folk group and “The Paniks”, he performed in such locales as The Bitter End Café and Town Hall. His single “V'al Yiday Zeh" from the album "Niggunai Breslov," was a popular request on New York Jewish AM radio, and his guitar playing and harmonious voice graced Eli Kranzler's first album, "Shirei Eliyahu." Although his heart remained with Jewish Music, Reb Dovidle ventured out into the secular music arena and composed and played the original guitar soundtrack for the award winning short film, “Freedom is… being anyone I want to be.” Yet the siren-call of Jewish music would not leave his soul in peace. After playing at local melave malkas, the longing to produce another album grew and so in 2008 he released his first solo CD, "Koach! Ashrey & More, Shabbat Shalom" which brings a hearty passion and new melodies to traditional Jewish songs and prayers. This was closely followed in 2012 by “Shema Kolaynu”.

Currently David lives in Houston, TX, where he enjoys performing at local events and sharing his passion for the tradition of his forefathers with all those who love a good song and a touch of passionate guitar playing, too!
